Uppittu /upma a very common breakfast dish can assume many forms - avalakki uppittu/khara bath/ akki tari uppittu etc. Posted here is a simple shyavige (vermicelli) upma, easy to prepare, interesting for children (looks wise).

Ingredients
- vermicelli - 1 bowl
- onions - 2
- mustard - 3/4 spoon
- urad dal - 3/4 spoon
- channa dal - 3/4 spoon
- green chillies - 3 -4
- curry leaves - 2 sprigs
- coriander - 3-4 sprigs
- ginger - 1 inch long
- oil for seasoning - 2 spoons
- salt to taste


Method
- Roast vermicelli to golden and keep aside
- chop onions lengthwise
- slit chillies, chop coriander and ginger keep aside
- In a wok heat oil, let it sputter, add channa dal, urad dal, fry till golden, add curry leaves, chillies, chopped ginger and fry, add chopped onions and fry till translucent.
- Add three times the measure of vermicelli to this and bring it to boil
- Add salt, stir well.
- Add roasted vermicelli and cook on low heat till it cooks. Keep mixing occasionally.
- Once the water is completely absorobed and vermicelli is cooked remove from fire. Upma is ready.
- Garnish with coriander and grated fresh coconut, squeeze in some lemon juice and serve (optional)


Tips
- Preroasted vermicelli is available at grocers
- To save time you can preheat water in a kettle and add
- Enhance taste and nutrition by adding chopped capsicum, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, baby corn etc while sauteing onions
- Add a pinch of turmeric /pepper powder if you feel so
