Avalakki /poha (beaten rice /rice flakes) can be used to prepare breakfast by combining it with vegetables, tossing in some spices, seasoning with herbs and nuts. Avalakki is the simplest possible cereal base for breakfast dishes. Avalakki dishes are also popular as Prasad offering in temples and during poojas.
This huli avalakki is prepared with coarsely ground avalakki.

Ingredients
- Thick poha - 2 cups
- grated cococnut - 3/4 cup
- coriander - 2-3 sprigs
- curry leaves - 2 sprigs
- green chillies - 3-4
- mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
- urad dal - 1 spoon
- asafoetida powder - 1 pinch
- water
- peanuts - 3 - 4 spoons
- channa dal - 1 spoon
- lemon - 1 big
- turmeric powder - 2 generous pinch
- fenugreek powder - 2 pinch
- oil for seasoning - 3 - 4 spoons
- salt to taste
Method
- Powder avalakki very coarsely using a mixer grinder, place it in a basin/pan, add water to completely submerge avalakki.
- In a kadai /wok heat oil, add mustard, let it splutter, add urad dal, channa dal, peanuts, roast till golden, add chillies, curry leaves, chopped coriander and saute for 1 minute, add turmeric powder, fenugreek powder, asafoetida and mix with the seasoning and stir till aroma wafts. Close the flame, add coconut, salt mix well
- Drain water completely from the soaked avalakki/poha and add to the wok with seasoning, suqeeze in the lemon and mix well. You can garnish it with fresh coconut and coriander (optional).
Tips
- Always use thick poha/avalakki for this dish. Paper avalakki or think avalakki /poha is not suitable.
- While soaking you have to immerse avalakki completely in water and drain out extra water.
- During mango season grated raw mango can be used instead of lemon.
